How Does My Septic Tank System Work?

Everything that goes down a drain goes to the septic tank
For example, doing a load of laundry, taking a bath and using the restroom. The liquids get dispersed throughout the drainfield & absorbed into the soil. Solids accumulate inside of the septic tank & should be emptied every 3 years depending on how active your home is.
It is normal to pump a tank on Monday & for it to be “full” by weeks end.
Only the solids stay in the tank. When a drainfield is in failure, the liquid can no longer be dispersed properly & the septic tank begins to act like a cup. With nowhere for the liquid to go, you will eventually have a backup inside and/or outside of the home.
A "lift station" may be required if the drain field
If it is located far away from the septic tank or if the topography of the area makes the septic tank sit lower than the drain field. This tank is located in between the septic tank and the drain field and has a control unit (alarm) and submersible pump that forces the wastewater out to the drainfield.
How long do they last & how much do they cost
Residential drainfields have a lifespan of 18-30 years-with proper maintenance. The cost of replacement can range anywhere from $3,500-$15,000+. This is why you should always have a septic inspection before purchasing a home.
